By ken payne sweeter that cotton candy and synonymous with rainbows, unicorns and sunshine are the bangles. the sexy quartet featuring vicki and debbie peterson, a handful of bass players most notably michael steele ; and sexy dream girl susanna hoffs have once again taken to the road this time touring the new release of their live dvd return to bangleonia. recently taking their tour to chicago's house of blues, the bangles have reminded concertgoers why they were one of the most dominant girl bands of the 1980's. throwing some of their more obscure songs into their set list as well as a couple covers, die-hard bangles fans were treated to a set they never thought would be played while casual fans got to see another side of the band but were also able to familiarize with classics like "walk like an egyptian", "eternal flame" and "in your room". after a long hiatus spanning from 1988-2000, the bangles regrouped, touring cities and jumping back into the studio resulting in 2003's release of doll revolution, which received rave reviews from fans and critics as it demonstrated the band's growth and delighted listeners with involved vocal harmonies case in point "ride the ride". plenty more lies ahead for the bangles. bangelonians should know the band has plans to record a new album, while susanna hoffs will continue her project sid n suzy with matthew sweet with a 70's version follow up to under the covers, a collection of 60's music performed by the two. if you haven't picked up return to bangleonia, it's about time you susanna hoffs brings bangles magic back to chicago photo by ken payne ; did. the dvd features a flawless live performance at the hollywood house of blues after the band reunited in 2000. one can see the fervor of the girls for playing on stage leaving one to wonder why they were gone for so long. the dvd contains an eighteensong set that is kicked off with "hazy shade of winter" and also includes an intimate, behind the scenes interview with susanna, debbi and vicki. in talking with susanna, her passion for the bangles past, present and future was evident in her enthusiastic tone as she considers the band her "other family". it's been a long, fruitful career and one with seemingly much reward and no regrets. buzz it really seems like vicki, debbie and yourself communicate with each other on such a fantastic level. what's the chemistry of the band like these days? susanna there is a very good communication between us. i would say that we're really just enjoying the music and because we have a lot of perspective on things having been through the 80's together, which was really an intense period for us where we were basically married laughs ; and locked in a room together close to ten years and touring continuously through the 90's where we took a break we all had families and then came back kind of for the love of music and the spirit of just wanting to continue where we left off, as opposed to "hey, let's go and be packaged on an 80's tour and go tour once a year" or something. that didn't appeal to us. so we came back to "bangledom" laughs ; "bangleonia" in the spirit of let's just play music, and that's the thing that's making it so worthwhile now. and on this tour in particular it's a funny thing - we've been playing since 2000, but for some reason with this tour we kind of went back through our, kind of. catalogue in history, and we started to pull things from really early bangles days, and kind of a mix all the way through, kind of a retrospective in a way. buzz cool. so when you guys got back together it had to be a really big change for you because you were thoroughly involved with your family. was it tough to just pick up and hit the road again? susanna hitting the road is tough even when i was doing solo stuff. it's not tough in terms of playing the shows; it's not tough in terms of playing the music. it's tough in terms of how are you going to take care of your family while you're on the road. luckily, jay [roach] and i have been able to take turns mostly with our work stuff our careers. when he's making a movie, i'm generally in a writing recording mode where i can be based in one place home. buzz so that takes some serious home time management. susanna yeah, but almost always i would say 99.9% of the time it's worked out somehow miraculously that when one of us has to be out of town for work, the other one is home. so it's been really great. i've never really taken the kids much out on the road because.
