This is the first novel from wouk's pen for some time. you probably read and enjoyed such earlier works of herman wouk as marjorie morningstar, the came mutiny, and aurora dawn, among others. he did not disappoint his fans when he wrote don't stop the carnival. most of us have dreamt sometimes of owning a hotel somewhere in the south seas. now, by the simple act of entering the body of norman paperman, we can do it. paperman is a middle-aged new yorker who has achieved fame of a sort as a successful and well-known broadway publicity agent. suddenly his glittering theatrical life seems to be empty, boring and unbearable. he chucks all of what he had considered important previously, and completely without hotel experience, and completely without any money, purchases a hotel on the island of amerigo in the caribbean sea. surprisingly, paperman turns out to be a pretty fair jack of all trades as well as an understanding personnel man. lester atlas is the first characterization you encounter in the novel when the plot begins with paperman and atlas flying down to look over the hotel. atlas is the sort of loud-mouthed, crude american portrayed so effectively in the ugly american. about 90 per cent sound, he is a genius at smelling out the places where money can be made. while letting paperman assume that atlas might bank-roll the purchase of the hotel, he does no such thing, preferring to arrange for the necessary cash from sources on the island, letting the news spread without making any effort to stop it that the two men are in the hotel in partnership. this false belief haunts paperman throughout the book. the principal portions of the novel have to do with just the opening -days of paperman's ownership of gull reef. one of the almost permanent residents of the hotel turns out to be a retired actress of an earlier day, iris tramm, with whom paperman has a love affair of a few days standing before discovering that the governor maintains the lady. her advice to paperman is excellent, as is her advice to his wife, who had undertaken to decorate the hotel. henny, norman's shrewd understanding wife, becomes the one normal person at the hotel.
