War is on the horizon. two bitter enemies will face off for world domination in the coming months. this war is different though. there won't be any terrorists' tanks or bombs, but rather small, plastic discs. the digital world is in turmoil over which format of high definition disc to use for their movies. on one side, there is hd-dvd: a format which has dominated the markets since its arrival. on the other is the new blu-ray which boasts a disk with five times more memory than its counterpart. sony, the maker of blu-ray, is hoping that its new-generation 50 gb dual-layer disc will be the dominant format in the new high-definition era. blu-ray, though lesser known than hd-dvd, has some impressive perks. the first noticeable difference, other than the huge memory, is that blu-ray has been chosen as the successor to dvd by seven of eight major broadcasting companies, fox, paramount, disney, etc. ; . the blu-ray website says that this is important because once a format dominates the market, new devices will be made to support that format, and only that format. hd-dvd has only been chosen by three major companies. so far, it seems that blu-ray is right. the majority of new hd video devices are being built to support blu-ray. it may seem like a blow to the dvd, but, there is still some hope for the old favorite. recently, the korean company lg announced its plans to build a player that supports both blu-ray and hd-dvd, in a move that may end the fight between the two emerging superpowers. -dan boyer.
