There's something brewing at riverdale. posters on the front doors. a banner along the south wall of school. talk of pub nights and weekend galas. though you may be aware of it, you probably haven't stopped to consider the significance of riverdale's centennial anniversary. well, consider this: in 1908, one year after its creation, the graduating class of riverdale featured just 20 students. this year, riverdale will see approximately two hundred students graduate. when we think of high school, we rarely think of anything more than our own experiences. the teams we've played on, the clubs we were members of, the times with friends. and although we are the present, the here and now of this building, it has seen so many others pass through its doors. morley callaghan, one of canada's most prolific writers, attended rci before his time at university of toronto's osgoode hall law school; canada's first elected black member of parliament, lincoln alexander was a student here; and the late steve stavro, grocery store magnate and co-owner of the toronto maple leafs, was another one of riverdale's distinguished alumni. though students have recently been dazzled by the visits of justin trudeau and junk yard dog, it's easy to see that riverdale has a long history of its own notoriety. when riverdale was first established, it was considered to be on the outskirts of the city. the student body was mostly white from working class families in the riverdale area. there was no chinatown. no little india. the building was a massive, imposing structure that bore more of a resemblance to prison than it did a school. girls were taught domestic arts and boys played football. there were even separate hallways for each gender, and punishment was severe to anyone caught straying from the appropriate hallway and you thought paul was strict! ; . but times changed, and slowly, the look of riverdale changed as well. not just the school itself, but its students as well. a surge of immigrants brought a new face to riverdale: asian, middle eastern, black, south asian. today it seems like just about every race is represented in our hallways. but that's not the end of the power and magic of riverdale. have you ever taken stock of the number of teachers who were once students here and have returned? it's here that you truly see the pull riverdale has on all who pass through its doors. salmaa muhamed, ryan wakelin and trung duong former students who have returned to the nest as leaders. or the numbers of teachers who have taught here longer than any of us have been alive? just look at john fallis, retired economics teacher and current substitute teacher, whose record at riverdale includes thirty two years as a teacher, baseball coach, and now benefactor. or bert de vries, an rci english teacher for twenty one years, twenty of those as department head. this is to leave out countless other retired staff, who have brought their knowledge and enthusiasm to riverdale through the decades. yes, there is certainly a lot to be said when it comes to riverdale's longstanding tradition of excellence. through good times, and tragedy, riverdalians have held their heads high and shown the strength they have. and what can learn from all this, from the shadows of past generations and old memories? we, the students of riverdale today, can be proud of our school, our traditions, our connection not only as learners at this great building, but as a community. we are the future, and we have riverdale to thank for helping to guide us there. meredith mclean editor.
